Sculptor and Landscaping
Hank Layman grew up in Ensley, Alabama, and attended Ensley High School in the 1960s. After serving in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam era, he studied painting and sculpture at Virginia Commonwealth University. Hank has had a lifelong interest in growing things and worked as a professional gardener on a large estate in Virginia. He has had careers in graphic design and production, warehousing and fulfillment, and sterile processing management. Now retired, Hank is combining his love of gardening with his concern for Ensley to develop “Oasis Gardens Ensley” — an urban agriculture initiative designed to beautify, enrich and feed Ensley. For the past 25 years, Hank and his wife have lived on two acres in south Shelby County, where he taught all three of his sons how to grow vegetables, fruits, and flowers.
